Function calling is the technical mechanism behind tool use. You define functions with JSON schemas (name, description, parameters), and the model chooses when to call them and with what arguments.
Most API providers (Anthropic, OpenAI, Google) support function calling natively. The model outputs a function call instead of text, your application executes it, and the result is sent back for the model to incorporate.
